The wonderful Butterfly house and fairy forest is the result of an idea by Enzo Moretto, naturalist and entomologist, who in the mid 70s laid the foundations of the house that was for a long time the first house dedicated to the fascinating world of Lepidoptera.
Seeing these colourful and elegant insects dancing freely around – even if it is difficult to define them insects – creates joy and emotions that assail both children and adults. The adventure, however, does not stop only in observing these colourful “bow ties”, but thanks to various routes you can go in different environments of biodiversity and be transported in the Amazon, Africa and Asia.
Once entered the house, you will immediately find yourself in the first teaching room where the journey begins and then winds through the different habitats that host various kinds of butterflies in spectacular settings. Right away you will come across the Monarch butterfly, the most familiar one. It is native to America and has marvellous yellow / orange wings with black borders with geometric figures and white dots of various sizes. Surely you will have seen it fly in the summer.
Passed a delightful small bridge then arrive in the second room “Garden of Eden” with a reconstruction of a tropical tree. In this room you can admire the chrysalises (or pupa) which are underneath transparent bells to closely observe their metamorphosis, that is the moment of hatching. It takes a bit of luck and patience!
And you should not miss the video room where some very interesting documentaries are screened to learn more about the world of butterflies, and to prepare to enter the tropical greenhouse of the Amazon. The butterflies have a very developed sense of smell and are attracted by the smells and often settle on visitors’ head, shoulders or hands; do not be scared but enjoy this magical moment! In this area dedicated to the Amazon, you will also meet the blue Morpho butterflies, which are so beautiful that will leave you breathless! From here you will reach the Indo-Australian area with fascinating and rare plants. Among their leaves their eggs are laid and will give life to new butterflies.
And here we come to the gate of Fairy Forest: a wooded park of 6000 m2, where you can meet elves, admire unique stones and an aviary of moths. In this structure all the senses are engaged thanks also to the laboratories where to have tactile experiences.
The structure is open from March to May, June, July and from mid-September to the end of November from Wednesday to Sunday. In August, it remains open from Tuesday to Sunday.
